The Jar of Tears: A Memorial for the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto
This Storytelling performance is based on the life of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapiro, known as the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto. Rabbi Shapiro wrote of his spiritual struggles while confined in the ghetto and though he did not survive the war, his buried writings were found. Instead of sermons, I imagine Rabbi Shapiro left a journal of his personal letters to the Master of the World.
I created this performance because I stand in awe of Rabbi Shapiro’s creativity and religious imagination. Rabbi Shapiro grappled with ultimate meaning and creatively explored how to remain connected to the Source of Life amidst the utter catastrophe that was the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. I believe his writings are relevant for everyone who allows tragedy to touch our heart.
