Stanford Shabbaton 2012

You and other Jewish high school juniors from across the country are invited to join the Stanford Jewish community over Shabbat to catch a glimpse of the rich Jewish life here at Stanford. Homemade kosher meals, student panels, Shabbat zemirot, a personal information session with an admission officer, palm trees, and fresh-baked challah are some of the exciting treats you we have in store for you.
We are very excited because recently we secured some funding to subsidize travel costs. So far, we have been able to met between 80%-100% of all financial aid requests.
The Shabbaton is from Friday, May 18th through Sunday, May 20th, and it’s for students who have not yet applied. For more info and registration: shabbaton.stanford.edu
Please don’t hesitate to contact the Shabbaton coordinator, Josh Bowman, with questions: jbowman@stanford.edu or (610) 757-7869

Warmly,

The Jewish Student Association at Stanford

Local Yom HaShoah Performance

What: Yom HaShoah Storytelling Performance

When:  April 17, 11-12:15; refreshments following performance

Where: Greenfield Community College Sloan Theater

Cost: Free

The Jar of Tears: A Memorial for the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto

This Storytelling performance is based on the life of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapiro, known as the Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto.  Rabbi Shapiro wrote of his spiritual struggles while confined in the ghetto and though he did not survive the war, his buried writings were found.  Instead of sermons, I imagine Rabbi Shapiro left a journal of his personal letters to the Master of the World.

I created this performance because I stand in awe of Rabbi Shapiro’s creativity and religious imagination.  Rabbi Shapiro grappled with ultimate meaning and creatively explored how to remain connected to the Source of Life amidst the utter catastrophe that was the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII.   I believe his writings are relevant for everyone who allows tragedy to touch our heart.
